Students who complete Art and Art History courses will develop strong foundation level art practices with a variety of medium and techniques. Courses will stimulate conceptual thinking and critical analysis through direct application and experience, as well as foster an understanding of art within history and culture. Art and Art History courses prepare students for transfer to universities and art schools and provide students with the necessary skills to enter the arts workforce.

Students who major in the field of art have a variety of opportunities open to them. Choices include careers in teaching, art criticism and appraisal, historic preservation, gallery/museum studies, or work as practicing artists.

Studies in the Fine Arts include beginning and intermediate levels of drawing, life drawing, painting, two-dimensional design, color theory, sculpture and digital photography. The Art program serves students seeking to transfer or to work toward an associate of art degree. The primary mission of our program is to prepare students for transfer to a four-year college, university or art school and/or to earn an Associate of Arts degree.  Students from the Art program have been awarded scholarships and transfer to prominent art programs including Otis College of Art and Design, Chicago Art Institute, UCLA, UC Berkeley, CSU-Long Beach, and CSU-Channel Islands among other institutions.

The Art Program courses are designed to employ critical thinking skills for student’s development of their own work and the work of others. This is achieved through basic drawing skills, color manipulation and design principles in areas of emphasis. For those pursuing three-dimensional arts the program develops the creation of objects in specialized areas of emphasis.
