Biological Sciences

Associate of Science, Associate Degree for Transfer, Associate of Science for Transfer

The Biological Sciences Department offers a diverse range of undergraduate biology courses.  The study of Biology leads to a a variety of careers upon the attainment of the baccalaureate degree. Many students then prepare for entry into graduate school or professional programs in dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.  Careers are found in teaching, research, biotechnology, and government service.

Associate Degree for Transfer, Associate of Science for Transfer
Biology is the study of living organisms from those composed of one cell to those made of trillions of cells and everything in between, including bacteria, mushrooms, humans, other animals, and plants. Biology majors also receive a strong foundation in other science fields, as these are relevant to living organisms. For example, all living things are made of molecules. So to understand how these molecules will interact in living organisms, biology majors will receive a foundation in chemistry.

Study in the Biological Sciences curriculum promotes mastery of key biological terms, processes, and techniques. Students acquire understanding of the central dogma of molecular biology, as well as the mechanisms of and evidence for evolution. Additionally, they learn to identify key entities at multiple levels of biological organization, they formulate and evaluate hypotheses, learn to contrast scientific and non-scientific ideas, and demonstrate an understanding of the primary ethical issues related to biology.
