The Child Development Department prepares students for transfer to a bachelor's degree program in Child Development or a related discipline, an Associate in Science Degree in Child Development, completion of Certificates of Achievement, and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing  levels of Assistant, Associate Teacher, Teacher, Master Teacher, Site Supervisor and Program Director. Students who complete Child Development courses will be able to apply concepts of child growth, development, and learning from conception through adolescence within the family and cultural context.

The Oxnard College Early Childhood Education Program develops the knowledge and competence of students interested in teaching or working in related careers with children birth through third grade. The Program provides a sound theoretical foundation in principles of child growth and development from the prenatal period through the primary years, as well as a functional understanding of programs and curricula appropriate for young children. Skills emphasized include child observation, curriculum planning for diverse learners, advocacy, and interpersonal and communication abilities.

The Child Development program trains students to work with infants, toddlers, preschool, and school age children in center-based child care, family child care, school districts (including Transitional Kindergarten) and afterschool programs.  It also prepares students to work in non-profit agencies that support children and families. Child Development courses also provide the opportunity to update knowledge and skills for in-service professionals.
